Summary/Abstract: In the history of Ukrainian literature, due to Ukraine’s century-long status of being a conquered nation, there have been many “poètes maudits”, poets living outside or against the society, great poets who were doomed and reclaimed from obscurity by some fortunate turn of events. One of them is Vasil Tkachuk (1916–1944), a self-taught writer-poet, eulogist of rural Pokuttya, who authored his works in the 1930s. Popular with the artistic bohemia of Lviv and a member of the National Ukrainian Writers’ Association (1940), he was completely forgotten after his death. Soviet historiographers ignored his existence. Today his rediscovered talent amazes and delights readers, and he is often compared to Vasyl Stefanyk, the great master of classical Ukrainian prose.
