Summary/Abstract: Despite the many undoubted achievements of teaching and research of higher agricultural education, its actual impact on the condition of the agriculture and the Polish countryside remained highly inadequate to the expectations and expenditures. These institutions remained, like the rest of the Polish higher education establishments, weakly associated with the business practice. The importance of organizational changes and the formation of large structures was fetishized. The ideologically and politically conditioned belief that the quantity would lead to quality, was dominant. The teaching effort was wasted to a large extent, since a significant number of graduates of higher agricultural schools did not take hard, relatively low-paid jobs in the agriculture. The rural population remained very poorly educated, conservative and resistant to change. In such conditions, the impact of higher agricultural education for the Polish countryside was very limited.
