Summary/Abstract: With this introduction to reading Croatian literature from Slavonia, we have outlined the itinerary of our research interest towards the recognition of four fundamental genre and stylistic strategies: Slavonian Literature, Slavonia in Literature, Croatian Literature in Slavonia and Slavonian War Literature. Since this is not classical periodization but a set of genre and stylistic strategies, it must be said that the poetic features within the said classification have been taken from the body of Croatian literature. This means that the strategic term Slavonian Literature follows the period from the beginnings of literacy in the Middle Ages (12th century), through the periods of Humanism and Baroque till the end of the 18th century. The strategic term Slavonia in Literature was present in literary and cultural activity between the early 19th century and the year 1950, having in mind the periods such as romanticism, realism, modernism, expressionism, social literature/proto-existentialism. Croatian Literature in Slavonia draws attention to the fact that between 1951 and 1991 the writers from Slavonia were a constituent part of the poetical matrix of Croatian literature of that period (writers gathered around the magazines Krugovi and Razlog; concretists / fantastic literature writers and postmodernists), thus belonging to a wider Croatian literary context. The last strategic denotation, Slavonian War Literature, covers the period between 1991 and 1995 and points out the characteristics of Slavonian war literature in relation to the genre of Croatian war literature.
