Summary/Abstract: The problem of a lack of translation and interpretation services from Russian and into Russian is brought forward in the light of social changes and social preferences in Lithuania. The poor level of the mentioned services is interpreted as obvious lack of professionals who would be able to perform the role, as well as a clear need of a supervisory body which would take up the responsibility of translation and interpretation performance quality. The authors suggest several ways of promoting the profession of a translator/interpreter from Russian. The main way should be a systematic approach towards the development of professional competences and a lifelong attitude towards them, starting with the compulsory school and going on with university and upgrading programmes. The prestige of Russian as a foreign language should be supported and promoted at all educational levels.
