Summary/Abstract: The article “Connotational Ekphrasis: Rembrand’s Bathsheba in the Interpretation of Gustaw Gerling-Grudziński” focuses on the issue of describing a work of art in an essay. As a starting point for the analysis and interpretation of an artefact, the paper brings closer the very work of art, i.e. Rembrandt’s Bathsheba, from the perspective of art history. Next, the text discusses the verbal account of the painting put forward by Gustaw Herling-Grudziński in his essay “Rembrandt in a Miniature”. The aim is to present a concrete realization of ekphrasis and a characteristic mode of perceiving and writing about a work of art – both at the level of content and at the level of language. Finally, it is proposed to label the discussed example ‘connotational ekphrasis’.
