Summary/Abstract: This study focuses on Albanian contemporary literature, not in its entirety, but rather on a group of works and authors who were prosecuted or imprisoned on political grounds by the Serbian regime in Kosovo, as well as on literature written by political prisoners in Albania. This grouping does thus not constitute an integral whole produced by political or geographical development, but they are instead brought closer by the common national and historic culture of people sharing the same blood and language. This is an effort to study on a historic and literary level the developmental structure of the literary work produced by particular authors within the framework of Albanian literature, in the period 1945 – 2001. A variety of authors and works representing several generations of writers shall be selected for purposes of this synthetic study. More specifically, we will focus on writers actively involved in national and political matter and whose ordeals with imprisonment and prosecution have been reflected in their works, which, in their turn, not only constitute a documentation of the vivid historical memory preserved in them, but also bear artistic values. These works generally enrich the structure of the Albanian contemporary literature with particular varieties and sentiments, rich subtext and often distinct allegorical and symbolic forms, literary realities based largely on the essence of suffering, of life and freedom, of authentic personal and collective dramas shaped according to the philosophy of imaginative literature.
