The Possessions of Mount Athos in Melnik and its District in 14th Century

Summary/Abstract: An important accent of the history of the city of Melnik during the 14th century is the relations with Mount Athos. The publication will review the type and the character of the Mount Athos’ possession in Melnik and the region of Melnik during the marked period. Tracking the Athos property in Melnik leads to several conclusions. In general, Athos acquires two types of property. The first type is the land plots with their related gaining’s. An example in this respect is the landed properties in Melnik and its surroundings owned by the monasteries Zographou and Chilandar. The second types of property that the Monasteries of Mount Athos received in the city, are the Melnik’ subsidiaries/ metochions passed down to Vatopedi and Iviron. This form of ownership is characterized by the transfer of possessions consisting of movable and immovable property.
