Summary/Abstract: The article shows the developed characteristic of one of the largest monastic prisons of the Russian Empire which existed in the territory of the Suzdal Spaso-Evfimiyev monastery at the end of XVIII — the beginning of the XX century. The contingent of prisoners and the conditions of their imprisonment are analyzed. It is shown that in “the religious Bastille” there were mainly those to whom crimes against church and the state, and the persons of a ministry punished for violations on service were incriminated. Most of prisoners were in the heavy material living conditions aggravated with application of cruel punishments. It is noted that the monastic imprisonment in pre-revolutionary Russia didn't bear humanistic penitentiary contents and was aimed only at eradication of religious and political dissent.
