Summary/Abstract: S. Taneev’s opera “Oresteya”, from the first sight, is not typical for the Russian classical opera work. Based on choir scenes analysis and their functions estimation in the dramaturgy of the work, this article shows that oratorical style distinctive for M. Glinka’s operas is a key feature of S. Taneev’s opera style. “Oresteya’s” place in the classical Russian opera evolution is defined, as well as its “predictive” meaning for the musical theater of the 20th century.
