Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes metatextual procedures in Gloria in Excelsis, a novel by Miljenko Jergović, based on Linda Hutcheon’s distinction between diegetic and linguistic mode of self-consciousness or narcissism of the text, and its two forms, overt and covert. In Gloria in Excelsis, there are many overt diegetic forms of self-consciousness (exordial formulas, mise en abyme, commentaries on various aspects of the story, its purpose, form, characters, irony), which means that the narrative becomes self-reflexive and draws attention to the way it is created. In terms of its diegetic forms, the paper argues that the novel especially questions narrative time and focalization. The paper also focuses on the novel’s different genre determinants, as a chronicle, a new historical novel, a stream-of-consciousness novel, and a fantasy novel. The text also abounds in the forms reflecting overt linguistic self-consciousness (listing, auto-quotation, insertion of letters, newspaper articles, poems, report, etc.), which are not always graphically indicated. However, actualized forms of linguistic self-consciousness are not present in the novel. In conclusion, the novel’s distinctiveness lies in its diegetic and linguistic modes and in the ways of actualizing metatextuality, while the reader actively participates in decoding and creating this fictional world.
