Summary/Abstract: The routine ways of addressing between the spouses has continued to be in use since the cultural components of traditional social models have been followed. The standard traditional ways of addresses between the spouses such as “bey, herif, adam, ağa, efendi, karı, hanım, hatun” have changed and became diverse with the changes in socio-cultural and economic life. Those old addressing types changed into “canım, aşkım, tatlım, güzelim, erim, karım”. As the extended families have turned into nuclear families and the gender perceptions and socio-economic roles of the spouses have evolved, meeting potential spouses and interpersonal relations became more diversified and these changes have led to new ways of addressing between Turkish spouses. This study focuses on the ways of addressing between the old generation spouses who are regarded as the last representatives of the traditional family model rather than the modern family spouses, and stresses on the specific style these traditional couples use in addressing each other. Although the Balıkesir region is home to people from different ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, it has been observed that the couples addressing each other with the names of their children are very large in numbers among these traditional couples. This tradition of addressing each other with the name of the eldest child of the family among spouses with many children has continued for a long time. The primary objective of this study to define the background of this practice and to interpret whether this nominal circumvolution has deep traditional consciousness.
