Summary/Abstract: The political crisis of the VIII th century has a determining role in the historical development of the First Bulgarian Empire. In the article the Idea is developed that apart of the so far explanations of the the crisis of the VIII th century as based on the struggles for power between the noble clans, this crisis was also a crisis of the supreme rulership‘s power. And on the second place, the crisis of the supreme rulership‘s power was provoked by the strong rivalry between the offices of a specific, in the Bulgarian exemple – ethnospecific phenomenon, the so-called co-regency or double rulership institution. In analyzing some of the vicissitudes of that rivalry, the author supports the interpretation of the events, as was suggested by V. Beshevliev and Georgui N. Nikolov. According to the author a little but very important addition has to be introduced in their interpretation, namely that the supreme, but formal ruler was the Kavkhanos, and the real supreme ruler was the so-called Khan syu-begi.
