Possible Frame work for Understanding the Visual Culture of Doclea in the Context of Cultural Dynamics in the Mediterranean and South Eastern Europ

Summary/Abstract: This paper proposes that in the study and understanding of visual culture of Doclea in the context of cultural dynamics in the Mediterranean and South Eastern Europe in Classical and Late Antiquity the transcultural or cross-cultural method be employed as best suited to the actual historical processes of fluctuation of people, ideas, goods, images, religious practice and works of art in this area in the periods in question. The author argues in favor of combining the “generalism” of art history and “particularism” of archaeology in providing a sound basis for understanding Doclea in context and as a Place, in the sense defined by Marc Auge, one of shared history, related to cultural models, cultural dynamics and identity.
