Summary/Abstract: The studies of verb prefixation in various 18th and 20th c. writers performed on the basis of language awareness rather than the language norm of the period imply that the occurrence of verb prefixes in historical periods of the Polish language was somewhat optional. However, if we extend our studies on the language norm of the given period we come to the conclusion that differences in prefix selection between the 18th c. prefixal verbs and the 20th c. structures are by no means arbitrary but, on the. contrary, are the result of general tendencies such as the specialization of particular prefix formatives in word-formation and the interchanges of meaning between them. The conclusion oresented here is the result of analysis of statistical data covering verbs with prefixes of adlative, ablative and perlative meaning of the eighteenth c. standard Polish and its stylistic variations in which only 8% of verbs show variances in the use of prefixes as compared with the contemporary language norm.
