Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the results of research carried out among first year students of the Institute of English, University of Łódź. The aims of the research were: a) to find out whether the students have a functional knowledge of English intonation and whether they can use their knowledge in practice, and b) to find cut whether the students ' regular contact with English during their first year of studies (and especially in Practical English classes) has helped them to broaden their knowledge of English intonation. The research was divided into two phases: the first part was completed in October 1978, the second in October 1979. On the basis of the results of the research two factors have been analysed: the correctness of the tunes and the intonational correctness of the types of clauses. In the'second phase of the research the performance of the students appeared to be 20% better than that of the first phase. Those tunes and pitch patterns which should receive more attention during the process of teaching English intonation to Polish students are pointed out in the last part of the paper.
