Summary/Abstract: In each organization it is the manager who plays the fundamental role enablingit to grow and develop. However, the diversification of business personnel makes it hardto define the role of the professional manager in an organization. Furthermore, there is nouniversal and commonly accepted definition of the term “manager”. In a classical understandingdeveloped by P.F. Drucker a manager is “each white collar worker, who by virtue ofhis position or knowledge is responsible for the work physically affecting the ability of theorganization to achievements”. The author is of the opinion that manager’s tasks cannotbe limited only to being responsible for other people’s work as the manager is a memberof an organization, a part of its body or structure and therefore, he is responsible for theorganization as a whole. The word “manager” comes from Latin. It was composed of twowords: manus which means hand and agere which means “to set in motion, carry along, toact”. Therefore, the manager is someone who directs processes, someone who gets workdone through other people by initiating and directing actions [Doede 2009, p. 39].The role of the manager in contemporary enterprises is undoubtedly significant. Therefore, the subject of this analysis is to place his role in the theory of business management. This article is an attempt to outline management theories and indicate the relationshipbetween the theory of competence and TQM. The subject of discussion is also the problemof the talent and managerial competencies in management as methods affecting the efficiencyof the functioning of an organization.
