The Interpreter and his/her Watchtower: A Look upon the Recent History of Spain in A Heart so White by Javier Marías

Summary/Abstract: First published in 1992, Javier Marías’s novel A Heart so White is considered one of the best literary works of the 20th century and has received several prestigious awards (Premio de la Crítica1993, Prix L’Oeil de la Lettre, 1993, and the Dublin IMPACD Prize, 1997). The main character in this novel is an interpreter, Juan Ranz,who witnesses, from his privileged vantage point, several fictional and historical events. Our analysis will focus on his role as conduit/gatekeeper and on the metaphorical representation of interpreters in relation to the Spanish Transition from Franco’s dictatorship to democracy.
