Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyse legal solutions regarding national referendum in Slovakia and to discuss the results of people’s voting. Taking into account the number of national referenda conducted in Slovakia (8 votings; 18 subjects of vote) Slovakia is recognised as a leader in Central Europe. However, an analyses of the circumstnces for conducting a referendum, the subject entitled to conduct it, people’s attitudes and finally referendum’s results let us give the hipothesis that the frequency of referendum does not correspond to the main idea of a referendum as a form of direct democracy. More, a referendum is often instrumentally used by the political elites.
