The expressive range of gazes in visual artifacts

Summary/Abstract: The ever-increasing number of visual artifacts, of creators of such artifacts invites a search for new ways to examine the recognized richness of expression and meaning of the visual fields, to produce tools meant to investigate their relevance. Visual semiotics is one theoretical-methodological field most interested in this search. Groupe μ has proposed a methodology to help analyze images, and I will try here to detail one of its aspects: to the expressive instruments subordinated to orientation, a formeme (alongside dimension and position) of form (texture, form and color define the plastic sign), we can add the gaze. That is the gaze of character-forms within the visual fields. I thus sketch a typology of the gaze and examine visual artifacts that actualize some of its types
