Summary/Abstract: This investigation clarifies the nature of the demographic ageing by tracing out its dynamics. The main factors for the highly unfavourable shares of children (0-14 years old) and old-aged population (over 60 or 65 years) are analysed. The process of aging started in the 1940s but then it was too slow. In the next decades it proceeded smoothly whereas towards the end of the 20 th c. and at the begin-ning of the 21 st c. its rates accelerated enormously. The trend towards a decrease in birth rates and fertility is responsible for the tiny share of children in the country – one of the smallest in Europe. The population aging is compared to that in the other European states. A conclusion is drawn that in Bulgaria, by contrast with the these states, the aging results from the higher death rates, the lower life expectancy and the intense emigration. Thus, at the beginning of the 21 st c. Bulgaria is remarkable for its smallest share of children in Europe like Italy, Spain and Greece, and for its very big share of people, aged over 65. Among the criteria, which have been employed to determine the level of aging, are: the share of children, the share of people at advanced age, the share of people aged over 50, who do not contribute to the birth rates, the average age of the population, the ratio „young/old“ persons and age dependency ratio. Besides, the research work focuses on numerous consequences, associated with aging, and outlines the gloomy perspectives in this respect.
