Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the relation between dialectology and other disciplines through a verification of the notion dialectology. According to the author an analysis of the relations between dialectology and other scientific lines better illustrates the topical richness of dialectology, which has undergone considerable changes and transformations in the course of its history. The author concentrates on three issues: 1) the out-dated character of the definition of dialectology (in Polish linguistics) resulting from disregarding the historical changes which extended the denotation of the term; 2) the problems of categorisation arising from the placement of dialectology within the field of linguistic science tin the one hand and within the systematization of sciences on the other; 3) the autonomy of dialectology as opposed to other fields of linguistics. ln the conclusion the author points out that dialectology is not a division of linguistics on equal terms with e.g. lexicology, but that it is a part of linguistics with great autonomy derived from the specific character of its subject matter and methods, from the wide range of research and from multilevel, specific relations with other lines of science.
