Summary/Abstract: The article examines the attitude of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church towards the proclamation of the state independence of Bulgaria in 1908 and 1909. The text also analyses the public discussion in the press, aroused by the issue concerning the fate of the exarchate in the Ottoman Empire under the changed political circumstances.
