Summary/Abstract: The present article deals with the issue of communicative competence of professionals helping people in difficult life situations as an important factor in the context of the effectiveness of their actions. It tries to answer questions about the desired forms of communication from the perspective of the theory of competence and social communication, referring to the author’s experience and statements of people using various forms of institutional assistance.The factors suggested in the literature to build a good relationship and to motivate people who are in difficult situations to make positive changes are analogous to the principles of the Motivational Interviewing. Respect for people with whom practitioners meet during their professional duties, accepting their full autonomy and recognition that they are specialists in their lives, allows for a deeper understanding of their problems and gentle accompanying in their solution.The aim of the publication is encouraging practitioners to use of Motivational Interviewing as an empirically established clinical method and to search their own ways of helping.
