Summary/Abstract: This year marked the passing of 100 years from the birth of the Republic of Estonia on 24 February 1918. After the times of turbulence in between, we, the Estonians, are now able to celebrate this event for the 27th year since the regaining of independence. If we also count in the past decades of sovereignty(1918–1940), it appears that we have been able to sustain our independence for about half the time. The other 50 years of deprivation did not mean that we ceased to exist: the land, the culture and the faith of the people in restoring the independence and national continuity did not fail even under occupation.
