Summary/Abstract: In his discourse titled Ikona nowoczesności [‘The Icon of Modernity’], Wojciech Tomasik investigates into literary representations of railway [note: the Polish for ‘railways’ and ‘vicissitudes’ is homonymous], juxtaposing them with a variety of cultural texts (visual arts, architecture, socio-political journalism). Railway appears to be an alternative essence of modernity (as seen against the Town); hopes and fears of a human exposed to confrontation with modernity forces are revealed in its changing representations.
