Summary/Abstract: Tudor Vianu (1894-1964) sought to give new form to rationalism in the Romanian philosophy of the twentieth century. He criticized Cartesianism and introduced the concept of „irrational”– it is not conceived as an anti-rational, but as what is still beyond reason and can not yet be explained by reason. Vianu was influenced by the „philosophy of life” (Lebensphilosophie) in aesthetics and culture philosophy. But he categorically rejected the specific irrational aspects of this current, and in particular the concept of "living" (Erlebnis) opposed to reason and knowledge.
