Summary/Abstract: In the article the postmodernist approach to the Middle Ages of Umberto Eco is considered analyzing his novel The Name of the Rose. In this novel, Eco shows the controversies of medieval Weltanschauung, philosophy, Church politics, and culture. He focuses attention especially on the discussion between realists and nominalists. Applying the postmodernist reduction of realism to universals, Eco shows that all contemporary problems of politics and the economy have their own roots in the cultural and intellectual controversies of the Middle Ages. Describing some historical events, he exposes the humanistic values of nominalism as destructive to scholasticism and the spirit of the Middle Ages.
