Summary/Abstract: The edition of the letters by Tymon Terlecki and Erwin Axer – two individualswho made their mark in the history of Polish theatre – lets us take a glimpseat some issues important for the Polish culture and theatre of the second halfof the 20th century and follow an exchange of ideas between an artist working in the country and a professor forced to stay abroad as an emigrant. To both,theatre was a passion and continuous professional challenge. The correspondence encompasses the years 1957–1994 and comprises 44 letters. Erwin Axer wrote about the productions that he was working on at the time, including Three Sistersby Chekhov, Die Schwärmer (The Dreamers) by Musil staged in Austria, Tripticby Max Frisch, La Ronde by Arthur Schnitzler, Endgame by Beckett, and playsdirected in Germany, To Damascus by Strindberg, Uncle Vanya by Chekhov,Tango by Mrożek, and Destination by Thomas Bernhard. While staying abroadhe sent letters describing the political situation in Poland, thus circumventingthe censorship. The preface to the edition presents the relations between thecorrespondents and names the archives in which the letters are kept.
