Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses a fragment from the novel Pevci [Singers], published in “Beogradske novine” in 1917 under the title “Prošli dani” [Past Days], divided into three instalments. Besides a review of Borisav Stankovic’s reasons for the cooperation with an occupation newspaper, the paper discusses his motivation for the use of an additional explanatory title “Balkanski tipovi” [Balkan Characters] in order to reprint some already published short stories and novel fragments. The paper also indicates the interventions in the 1917 text by comparing it to the text from 1902/03. The changes do not merely include punctuation interventions, but also certain variations in the depiction of the characters, a change in the plot’s focus, the introduction of a festive atmosphere, and deletion of certain sentences. Particular attention is paid to the addition of a final paragraph, which gives an analysis of Stankovic’s outlook on war and the individual’s role in it. The paper also accentuates the question of the legitimacy of genre changes (novel to short story), i.e., the question of potential editorial interventions.
