Summary/Abstract: The possibility of building substantive comparative and superlative forms is a well-known fact in many Balkan languages, such as in Bulgarian and Romanian (substantives), Bulgarian (verbs), Romanian (some pronouns). A series of examples with the pertinent comments on this issue are found in: , 1981. The author has enriched its survey with examples and analysis from the Albanian. She notes two ways of comparative building: (1) comparing substantives in an independent position: e kam më shok se (he is more friend to me than)…, qenka më gomar se (he is more donkey [stupid]) than)… and (2) building of comparative of substantives preceded by a preposition: më me guxim (lit. more with courage), më me rrëmbim (lit. more with vehemence), është më në gjendje (he is more in the position [more able]) etc. After considering a carefully selected material, the author concludes that it may be expected that the difference among Balkan languages run along the inclusion vs. non-inclusion of other discourse parts than adjectives and adverbs. As reference point could be considered the Bulgarian, in which this category characterizes many discourse parts.
