Summary/Abstract: In this article author treats the phenomenon of musallas in Bosnia and Herzegovina from religious and cultural-historical perspective. In the first part he explains appearance of musallas in the early Muslim communities, emphasizes its basic characteristics, places, its fundamental religious and cultural significance in the horizons of enormous Islamic civilization and tries to answer the question:what musalla is? In the second part author briefly reminds readers about the historical development of musallas and indicates the way in which musallas became one of the characteristic sacral-architectonic features of religious,social and cultural life of Muslims in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Ottoman period. Futrher on, author explains the types of musallas and ponders in that context about their meanings, functions, religious and social justification of their development; he has a special reflection on the types of musallas that were built in our country. In the continuation of the article author speaks about the downfall of musallas that took place in the late Ottoman and early Austro-hungarian period and which was ended in our contemporaries.
