Assessing the Similarity of the Geographical Structure of Foreign Trade in the Countries of the European Union

Summary/Abstract: This paper proposes a method that can be used to examine the similarity of foreign trade structure of EU countries. The purpose is to find relationships between the geographical structure of foreign trade and the countries’ economic potential. The index of similarity of structure, hierarchical cluster analysis and algorithm of vector elimination together enabled the grouping of countries that are most similar in terms of the foreign trade structure. The results show that countries with similar economic potential have a similar structure of foreign trade. The study used data from the Eurostat’s Comext database.
