Summary/Abstract: This brief intervention aims to contribute to the debate that has unfolded recently in the pages of Social Anthropology about the neoliberal approach towards the state. Here I would like to draw attention to the vague and contradictory nature of ‚actually existing neoliberalism’. In my analysis I review the related approaches of the participants of the debate, illustrating that the theory of neoliberalism, like its implementation, is heterogeneous and contradictory. Then I also reflect on the possibility of decolonialising ‘actually existing neoliberalism’. To support my points and to illuminate the nature of the ways in which neoliberalism is actually conceptualised and lived, I use the case study of Bolivia, a country that has explicitly declared itself ‘post-neoliberal’.
