Summary/Abstract: The issue of suburbanisation is still present in urban development analyzes. It often takes the spontaneous forms of urban sprawl. The problem of suburbanisation is mostly associated with the development of housing functions in these areas. The authors of the paper are concerned about the specific nature of the Polish suburbanisation process. It consists of the parallel development of two phenomenas: the classical suburbanization of settlements and the development of small and medium enterprises. Research conducted by the authors for the Gdansk – Gdynia – Sopot Metropolitan Area shows the correlation between these two forces. In territorial development, economic activity has been shown as a particular concentration of location. The territorial distribution of economic functions has been displaced and revalued. There has been a change in spatial orientation and concentration of industrial functions. The SME sector has also become an important material for territorial development, also diffusion of innovation. The authors have analyzed this process based on empirical data. The study covered 251 companies. Conclusions on the determinants and analyzes of the causal structure were derived.
