Summary/Abstract: This article is a reading of Proust’s In Search of Lost Time as a writing of desire: desire of love, desire of travelling, desire of high society life, desire of writing. Between desire and reality there isa gap: real things and beings are quite different from the way imagination pictures them. That is thereason why desire generally fails. The only exception is the desire of writing because it is the onlyform of desire which seeks its accomplishment in itself and not in the exterior world. Art as a realitywhich is sufficient unto itself, is the accomplishment of desire. Nevertheless, far from objectifyingitself as a closed structure, the principle of the work of art remains a principle of openness: thedesire of endless writing.
