Summary/Abstract: The parable of the prodigal son makes us realize that both external factors (such as following bad people's example or deceitful ideology, etc.) and internal factors (deceiving oneself by believing in illusions or false values) may put a man in danger. Children have always been „the light of their parents' eyes”, which was true in biblical times and still is today. However, children may also cause their parents a lot of problems and suffering. The prodigal son from the Gospel of Luke (15,11-32), may serve as an illustration of this truth about love of the father worried about the fate of his son. This paper consists of three parts. The first part is devoted to the analysis of the pedagogical dimension of the parable, the second part analyzes the theological dimension, and the third part is dedicated to the theology of mercy.
