Between the Chairs. On the Process of Incorporation of the German Academy of Music and Theatre Arts in Prague into the German Charles University (...)

Summary/Abstract: Discussions about a change in the status of the German Music Academy in Prague started soon after the signing of the Munich Treaty. Of the two proposals – either a move to the Sudetenland or incorporation into the Prague University – the latter won more support. It was vigorously backed especially by Professor Gustav Becking. The article follows the background of the whole process, which was treated even on the ministerial level, and traces the subsequent developments of the Academy, which had a non-standard position within the German Charles University and was subjected to war-time ideologisation. The author also follows the lives of the main protagonists of this process.
