Summary/Abstract: In June 2004, 352 million europeans voted for a new E uropean Parliament. For the first time ever, citizens from Cyprus, E stonia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, L atvia, L ithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia were able to participate in the election of a Parliament which in the last decades has been gaining competencies, political weight and popular representativeness. This paper tries to provide a detailed analysis of the outcome of this election, paying special attention to the contrast between the new and the old member states in aspects like turnout, motivation for the abstention, ideological preferences, levels of euroeskepticism, and electoral volatility.
