Summary/Abstract: Both during and after the life of the composer Antonio Smareglia, “The Smareglia Case” remained synonymous for injustice, prosecution and condemnation, which according to a deep belief of his family, was imposed on him by a “mafialike, corrupted and mystified Italian music scene”. These allegations are repeatedly strewn through the letters of the composer’s legacy sent to numerous private and official addresses. This paper endeavours to point out the need for new researches of the motifs of both sides in the Case – those of opera or theatre houses owners and those of family inheritors of ownership rights and/or copyrights for the performing musical pieces which they consistently sought to stages in Italian institutions.
