Summary/Abstract: In Alexandru Surdu’s philosophy, speculative thinking has a special meaning, derivednot only from the postulate of speculatio as a third faculty of thought, but also from itsliaison with the Latin word for ‘mirror’ (‘speculum’), and its conceptual bond withGreek ‘theoria’. My paper reviews some anthropological and philosophical expressionsof theoria to find out to what extent the latter offered a model in shaping the concept ofspeculation in Alexandru Surdu’s work.
