Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to present the Polish context of urban exploration, a practice consisting in the exploration and photographic documentation of abandoned and inaccessible places, in relation to dark tourism. Similarities and differences between both forms of tourism have been presented, as well as the methods of and reasons for practising and their social contexts. The article emphasizes the sub-cultural and social nature of urbex which manifests itself through the linguistic, ethical, practical and visual level - photography. Attention has been also paid to the mechanisms of creation and social functioning of abandoned places.
