Summary/Abstract: Marko Mäetamm has been one of the most productive Estonian artists during the last years. The project John Smith (together with another Estonian artist, Kaido Ole) is the most debated of his works, partly because it represented Estonia in Venice Biennale in 2003. However, in my paper I am focusing rather on two earlier series by Mäetamm: “The Chemistry of Being” (1999, “Vaal” Gallery, Tallinn, Estonia) and “Me Supernatural” (2000, Tallinn Art House). Like many other contemporary artists, Mäetamm explores the border areas in art. Therefore it is hard to pigeon-hole him into pre-existing set of categories.
