Summary/Abstract: In the mid-1990s, a new generation emerged in Estonian art. This was called ‘Generation X’ by some critics and ‘Generation E’ by others. Some claimed that the work produced by this generation lacked any message and ‘did not say anything’. Artists such as Jasper Zoova, Tarrvi Laamannn and Kiwa were most commonly connected with this generation, as well as the people called ‘trans-pop’ artists. However, this article does not take as its starting point the manifesto of that generation (or even their lack of a manifesto). Rather it looks at a common working principle used by the artists – including Hanno Soans and Marko Laimre, who are only superficially connected to the artists already mentioned. The same can be said about DeStudio (a joint project of photographers Peeter Laurits and Herkki-Erich Merila), which started its activities even earlier – in the early 1990s – but whose work reveals a certain structure of allegory which is relevant to this article.
