Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to offer a systematised overview of the relations between pictorial images and language, focussing upon the role of verbal text in the structure of pictorial art and in the emergence of the meaning of the work of art. The author also seeks to develop and systematise some hypothetical conclusions she has drawn in her book “Language and Art”. Similarly to the book, this article, too, examines the relations between the pictorial image and language. But while “Language and Art” was a kind of a journey along the more characteristic signposts of these relations and paid most attention to the problems of pictorial arts, the present article rather wishes to offer a synthesising overview of the relations between pictorial images and language.
