Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the activities of an informal revolutionarysyndicalist stream known as “direktaši” that was active within the Serbian Social Democratic Party from 1906 to 1912. Special attention is paid to the theoretical concepts of the key direktaši ideologists Nedeljko Divac and Sima Marković as well as the direktaši activity within the workers’ movement and their conflicts with the members of the party leadership. It discusses in what way and how direktaši revolutionarysyndicalism fits into Michael Schmidt and Lucien van der Walt’s concept “of broad anarchist tradition” and how this position relates towards anarchism and Marxism. The direktaši stream was very active both in the Serbian Social Democratic Party and in the syndicalist movement. Members of this political stream were characterized by a commitment to the idea and practice of direct action. This approach and attempt to put it into practice by organizing workers’ strikes brought them into conflict with the orthodox Marxist leadership of the Party and brought them closer to the anarchists. Apart from that, a conflict on the different visions of party and syndicalist organization was also taking place. While the orthodox Marxists advocated further centralization, direktaši proposed a federalist organization. The direktaši ideas were well accepted among the not very large but exceptionally militant Serbian proletariat disappointed in parliamentary politics and ready for direct battle with the state and capital which is confirmed by the number and character of strikes. This proletarian sentiment is the one that both the direktaši and anarchists attempted to direct towards syndicalist practice and theory.
