Summary/Abstract: Purpose – The main aim of the study was to assess the role of membership in shaping the financial sta-bility of polish cooperative banks, and in particular to assess the impact of the outflow of members on the level of share funds and the capital adequacy of cooperative banks. Design/Methodology/approach – Analysis of the literature, comparative analysis, using indicators that characterize changes in the number of members in cooperative banking, changes in the number of mem-bers in cooperative banking, changes in member’ shares and capital adequacy. Findings – In contrast to European trends, where a steady, systematic increase in the number of mem-bers is observed, the number of members drops in Polish cooperative banks. The decrease in the number of members has a negative impact on the level of share funds and capital adequacy. Membership does not contribute either to improving their capital base or to increasing sales of banking services. Originality/value – Research expands the findings of researches of the relationship between membership and financial stability of cooperative banks and the reasons for the outflow of members from Polish co-operative banks.
