Summary/Abstract: The paper questions potentials and conditions of participation of heritage institutions in the context of current, participatory culture. Starting from the understanding of participatory culture in general, through the understanding of participatory culture effects on heritage institutions' both theory and practice, the paper monitors changes that heritage institutions go through by adopting participatory techniques, with a goal of development into participatory heritage institutions. Following the best practice examples from Europe and around the world, the paper indicates advantages but also potential „pitfalls“ of user's participation in heritage institutions curatorial activities, all the while insisting on the need of adequate metadesign for participatory user's platform. In developing adequate strategies of involving users in the practice of heritage institutions, especially at the level of co-creating and sharing material items, continuation of heritage institutions is recognized even in the context of participatory culture. At the same time, participatory heritage institution is understood as a new, but still not the only, exclusive face of nowadays heritage institutions, while professional expertise of heritage institutions as well as expertise of their heritage professionals is still recognized as unavoidable for functional practice of heritage institutions of the future.
