New Finds of Weapons of the Roman Age and the Merovingian Age in the North-West Russia

Summary/Abstract: The publication introduces new finds of weapons and cavalry equipment of 1st—7th cc. BC from the area of Izhora Plateau in North-West Russia: iron blades of swords, spearheads, shield umbons, shaft-hole axe and a spur of copper alloy. Most items are associated with the culture of Estonian stone tombs. This culture occupied the region in the age of Roman influences and the Merovingian age. The wedge-shaped axis dated to 1st—2nd century BC, the other items can be dated to 5th—7th cc. BC. Most items come from the destroyed cremation burials in the west of Izhora plateau. The spur is an accidental find which was found without any archaeological context in a field in the central part of the Leningrad Oblast. It may be associated with the culture of Pskov long barrows.
