Summary/Abstract: The paper examines A. C. Swinburne’s essay Whitmania, which serves as an illu stration of the controversial responses to the poetry of Walt Whitman. Special attention is drawn to the reception of this essay in Serbian literary criticism, i.e. in Bogdan Popo vić’s article Walt Whitman and Swinburne.”The first part of the paper offers a brief re view of the reception of Whitman’s poetry in Great Britain, particularly focusing on Swinburne’s fluctuating and often contradictory attitude towards the American poet. The second part analyzes Bogdan Popović’s essay – his translation of Whitmania and his authentic critical remarks – as well as the context in which the Serbian essay appeared. This analysis shows the way the Serbian critic used Swinburne’s essay to express his own unfavorable view of Whitman’s poetry, but also to voice his animus towards the avant-garde tendencies in literature and arts.
