Summary/Abstract: In my paper I’ve tried to give some highlight to the deeds, policy and personality of the Spartan king, Kleomenes I. Our ancient sources — mostly based on Herodotus’s inconsistent narrative — make him seem like a minor, evil-minded figure who did not play a great part in the contemporary Greek world. Nevertheless, making a detailed analysis, we can find the roots of this spiteful tradition and give a more favourable account of the Spartan king, without whom this period (late 6th/early 5th century BC) cannot be really understood.
